The Stoughton Area Resource Team, Inc.
(START) provides a safety net for those in crisis. Recently, a 30-year old single father of two struggled to find work, to pay for daycare for his children and to secure a home; so much time was spent homeless and hopeless.

| Bunad construction training - 2026 |
Amount Funded: $4,000.00 |
| In terms of financial support for this year, Carolyn Benfordo is taking two classes with Gina Nyland of Bunad Creations: Bunad creations.com. Gina is the only certified bunader in the United States at this time. Typically, it takes several years to become a certified bunader in Norway. The first is online and the second is in person in Washington State. Both of these are to further her understanding of Bunad construction to share with students in Stoughton. Carolyn has been assisting the Norwegian Dancer Group for several years as well as a professional background.
The costs for 2026 are:
Online: constructing beaded trims: $200
In person for a 4 day teaching, including flight, lodging, tuition and shared rides is $2,275.00.
The bunader training through Bunad Creations typically involves attending three separate sessions. Carolyn may be attending a second session in the spring of 2027. The cost of the second session would be the same of 2026: $2,275.
We are still researching the cost of attending the certified bunader classes in Oslo. This would be a future goal for the group.
The embroidery classes are scheduled to take place at the Stoughton Senior Center.
The positive impact to the Stoughton area and community would be to revive the tradition of having more bunads and folk dress for both young and old as in years past. It further enhances the strong Norwegian heritage which makes Stoughton so very special. |
| The project involves establishing a series of classes dedicated to the art of bunad embroidery and construction. The first class “Embroidery for Bunads” is scheduled to begin on September 23 through October 28. Currently there are 8 local individuals who have registered to attend. The class will be limited to 10 individuals. Of the 8 individuals who have already registered, 4 have made the commitment to construct an authentic Norwegian bunad by purchasing kits directly from Norway. With this level of commitment, the next step will be to hold classes next spring to teach how to sew the finished bunad. There will also be classes on how to sew authentic Norwegian bunad shirts, beading and other bunad making skills.
This grant request is primarily focused on providing additional authentic training for the instructor.
Bunad classes were available in Stoughton from 1970s-1990s, taught by Marion Keebaugh. In this revival, in person, hands-on learning passes on skills and knowledge that have been part of our community for over 50 years. This first series of classes focuses on surface embroidery using bunad sample kits from Norway. |
