The Stoughton Area Resource Team, Inc. (START) provides a safety net for those in crisis. Recently, a 30-year old single father of two struggled to find work, to pay for daycare for his children and to secure a home; so much time was spent homeless and hopeless.

Senior Center VITA site 2024 - 2023 Amount Funded: $1,000.00
Timeline - The scheduling software will be purchased November/December 2023 for January 2024 implementation. The scanners and printers will be ordered for arrival before January 15, 2024. Events - The tax filing season will be approximately 2/1/24 through 4/15/24. Impact - Our Stoughton area taxpayers (by Zip code) increased by 35.1% in 2023 versus 2022. These grant purchases will increase our productivity and efficiency, which should allow another increase in tax returns prepared. Last year, our federal refunds for those Stoughton area taxpayers helped return over $65,000 to the community.
We are looking to increase our efficiency in preparing returns. While we helped prepare 127 federal tax returns for those individuals with a Stoughton Zip code mailing address, we see areas where technology and equipment could help improve those numbers. A. We currently dont have any way to schedule appointments without the taxpayer coming into the Stoughton Senior Center when we are in operation on Saturday. We would like to use Signup Genius so that people can schedule their appointments online. These appointments could also be set up online by Stoughton Senior Center staff during the week if allowed to by their manager. (Silver level $150 per year) B. Many of our senior clients have investment accounts where trading occurs and these sales have to be individually reported on the tax returns. This involves quite a bit of time for our volunteers in both data entry and review. Our software allows us to electronically attach a copy of the 1099-B Brokerage statement with the return. This would allow us to scan in the statements and then enter ONLY the totals, not individual line items. Two scanners would be purchased that would be able to be moved between our volunteers as needed to scan the documents, saving quite a bit of time. (Two Epson ES-400II scanners $800) C. Our current printers are outdated models provided to us by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Unfortunately, they are VERY slow in printing, which at times causes a bottleneck in the review area. While the IRS no longer provides printers to VITA sites, we do have multiple toner cartridges left for the Xerox 3610 printer (which the manufacturer has discontinued. (2 Xerox Phase 3610/DN, used, $1,200)
