The Stoughton Area Resource Team, Inc. (START) provides a safety net for those in crisis. Recently, a 30-year old single father of two struggled to find work, to pay for daycare for his children and to secure a home; so much time was spent homeless and hopeless.

Stoughton Student Empowerment - 2024 Amount Funded: $500.00
We have already registered over 70 Stoughton students for the programs described above. During the upcoming weeks, we will register more classroom, and train local volunteers to deliver the JA learning experiences in Stoughton classrooms. The programs will be delivered to Stoughton students at times agreed upon by the teachers and JA volunteers. Volunteers will visit Stoughton classrooms 5 times (40 minutes per visit). After all lessons are complete, teachers and volunteers will be surveyed to determine the how effectively students were engaged by the lessons, how well the lessons supplemented existing curriculum. These surveys provide feedback that is used to inform future curriculum enhancement. The results of JA programming aren’t always immediately apparent. Some JA programs have pre/post tests that can be administered at the teacher’s discretion to measure student knowledge gain and attitudinal changes. Junior Achievement USA, our parent organization, conducts regular surveys with JA Alumni (adults who had JA as students). These surveys measure the impact that JA programs had on their careers and life choices. JA Alumni earn 20% more than the general public, are 2.5 times more likely to start their own business, and are more likely to be better off than their parents. 86% of JA Alumni report that JA programs had a significantly positive effect on their self-confidence and the life choices they made.
This grant for $500 will help us fund the Junior Achievement programs delivered to 2nd and 5th graders in Stoughton schools during the 2024-25 school year. We have been invited by Stoughton teachers to train volunteers to teach two JA programs that help elementary school students learn age-appropriate lessons about money, business, careers, government and civics. JA Our Community uses posters and games to offer practical information about businesses and the many jobs those businesses offer in a community. Second-grade students explore production methods through a simulation game, and they learn about taxes, decision making, and how money flows in an economy. JA Our Nation provides students with practical information about the nations free market system and how it serves as an economic engine for businesses and careers. It also introduces the need for entrepreneurial and innovative thinking to meet the requirements of high-growth, high-demand careers and the concept of globalization in business. This grant will impact 100 Stoughton residents – 85 students who participate in the programs, 4 Stoughton teachers, and 4 local volunteers who meet with students and teach the JA curricula. Approximately 425 hours of volunteer time will be donated for the Stoughton programs. Stoughton teachers have requested JA programs in their elementary school classrooms for more than 7 years. Overall, our programs help set the foundation for success by teaching students how to plan for the future, prepare themselves for a self-sustaining career, and grow up to become engaged citizens of their community. Our goal is to continue to provide Stoughton schools with quality programs that conform to national and state standards and supplement their school curriculum with lessons about money, business, entrepreneurship, civics, and careers.
